Offsetting Carbon Footprint – What Does It Mean?

What is carbon footprint offset?
In the first place, we should discuss what are the greenhouse gases and global warming.
Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases are the greenhouse gases that help trap the heat in the atmosphere, that would otherwise escape from Earth. The present temperature of the Earth’s surface is due to the greenhouse gases. However, human activities like deforestation, the extraction of fossil fuels and industrial processes have increased carbon dioxide levels, along with other GHGs. Every time fossil fuels are extracted from the ground, the carbon stored within the earth is displaced into a different form. Increased GHGs within out atmosphere lead to increased temperatures, health problems, smog pollution, disruption of natural ecosystems. That gradual heating of the Earth’s surface is called global warming. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Earth’s average temperature has risen by 1.5°F over the past century, and is projected to rise another 0.5 to 8.6°F over the next 100 years. Climate change is happening now!
Our everyday actions contribute to the climate change. While we are travelling by car to work and using the electricity at home we all create carbon emissions and leave carbon footstep. We should start living a sustainable life and change our activities to reduce our carbon footstep. All the small changes can make a big difference.
“By changing nothing, nothing changes.” – Tony Robbins
So what is carbon footprint offset and how does it help us?
The carbon footprint is the released carbon in the atmosphere from activities like the usage of electricity, natural gas, heating oil; transportation by car, public transport, airplanes or ships, even from our diet.
Carbon offsetting is the fastest and cost effective way to balance a carbon footprint. Any individual or business can neutralize the already created carbon emissions of different activities. We all use energy in our everyday routines. This energy (most of the cases) is derived from fossil fuels, which as we mentioned are the main contributors to climate change.
Carbon offsetting is the process by which anyone can compensate for the release of GHG emissions by funding green energy projects, trees planting projects that destroy the GHG emissions or prevent their release. Easily said – we can invest in projects that reduce CO2, and this offsets the created carbon footprint by our own consumption and actions. Those projects play a vital role for the environment and most of them have a social impact for the local people.
